WHAT TYPES OF CLASSES ARE OFFERED?

At Ryu’s Martial Arts we offer traditional Tae Kwon Do classes for children, adults and families. Classes are separated by age and level, creating specialized classes that focus on the students needs. Each class is instructed in a way to improve focus, coordination, discipline and self-confidence. Adult classes include self defense, confidence building and an excellent cardio vascular work out. Family class offers families (parents and children) to be able to practice together and to develop a special family bond by participating together that not many other activities can promote.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TAE KWON DO AND OTHER MARTIAL ARTS?

The various martial arts that are practiced in the US all originated from different countries thousands of years ago: Karate from Japan, Kung fu from China, Ju Jitsu from Japan.   Each of these arts having different forms or variations created through the years. Tae Kwon Do is a Korean martial art that emphasizes kicking techniques. There are two types of Tae Kwon Do, ITF (International Tae Kwon Do Federation) and WTF (World Tae Kwon Do Federation), with the major difference being the forms practiced. All other basic techniques are the same. Due to the focus on kicking techniques, TKD can help improve balance, coordination, flexibility, and endurance. Due to its "pure" style, Tae Kwon Do is currently the only martial art that is a sport in the Olympics and is one of the fastest growing sports in the world.

WHAT IS IMPORTANT IN FINDING A GOOD MARTIAL ART SCHOOL?

Many people tend to choose a school based on price. As the old saying goes, you get what you pay for. When choosing a school for yourself or child, the quality of the instruction and curriculum are of the utmost importance. The facility, class schedule and atmosphere are all important and you should choose the one that best suits your needs. At Ryu’s Martial Arts, we strive to provide a quality martial arts education and a friendly atmosphere.

A few questions that you should think about when choosing a martial arts school:

    Quality of instruction

o  Who will be teaching class?

o  What are the credentials of the people teaching class?

o  Are you or your child getting the best education?

o  What do other parents/students say about the instructor?

Professionalism – Does the school have a set of standards and maintain those standards consistently among students?

    Schedule of Classes

o  Do the class times fit into your schedule?

o  Are the classes broken up by experience to ensure proper instruction?

Warm-up/Stretching – Stretching is a very important part of any exercise for any age. It is important to teach children at a young age to prevent future injuries.

o  Does the school have a warm-up routine before each class?

AT WHAT AGE CAN CHILDREN START?

Experience has shown that most children ages 4 ˝ (+) are able to take the greatest advantage of Tae Kwon Do classes. Children ages 4 ˝ - 6 are able to participate in our Little Kickers Class. This class covers exactly the same curriculum as Children’s class, but we found it takes this age group a little longer to pick up the techniques both physically and mentally. Children ages 6 (+) are able to participate in the Children’s class.

CAN I DO IT WITH MY FAMILY?

Absolutely! Many students have found this to be the perfect family activity. Both parent and child can attend their individual class and/or attend class together when Family class is offered. This gives you the opportunity to work directly with your child to create a special bonding experience.

WHO TEACHES THE CLASSES?

At Ryu’s Martial Arts, Master Kyung W. Ryu teaches every class. Master Ryu learned Tae Kwon Do in Korea and currently holds a 5th degree. He has over 10 years teaching experience and you will find he is friendly, enthusiastic and a great motivator. His many years of teaching have given him the insight on how to teach the many different types of personalities/disabilities that children have. At Ryu’s Martial Arts, you can learn the true value of the martial arts with a Korean Master Instructor.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO ACHIEVE BLACK BELT?

A black belt in Tae Kwon Do is symbolic of an advanced level of skill as well as above average physical, mental and emotional strength. The length of study necessary to attain a black belt varies depending on ones effort and dedication. On average, students train for a period of 3 years to achieve black belt status.

HOW OFTEN DO STUDENTS ATTEND CLASSES?

To obtain the true benefits of Tae Kwon Do, we recommend students of all ages participate 2 to 3 times per week. Classes for every belt level are offered numerous times a week, so you can pick the classes that best fit your schedule.

IS IT SAFE TO LEARN?

Tae Kwon Do is safe and fun for students of all ages and physical abilities. All classes are run by Master Instructors. All students are taught techniques in a step-by-step manner and at their own pace. Separating classes by belt levels, a thorough stretching routine, matted flooring, and the use of protective safety equipment are all part of our commitment to ensuring student safety.

WHAT IF I HAVE NEVER TAKEN MARTIAL ARTS BEFORE OR AM CURRENTLY OUT OF SHAPE?

At Ryu’s Martial Arts, we have ongoing enrollment, so beginners are always welcome. Our schedule offers classes for beginners 3 days a week. These classes are designed to teach all of the basic techniques as well as to let your body get into Tae Kwon Do shape. Even if you exercise regularly, Tae Kwon Do tends to use different muscles. The belt system used allows each student to train at their own pace and to improve their physical condition gradually.
